Jātaka is a popular genre of Buddhist literature consisting of a story from the life or past life of Gautama Buddha. It is one of the twelve divisions of the sutras 十二部經 or one of the 九部經 navaṅga 'nine categories' of literary composition. There are 547 Jātaka stories in the Pali Canon and a different set in the Jātakamālā 本生鬘, in Sanskrit. The Jātaka is made up of verse with a Jātakaṭṭhakathā 'prose commentary.'
